ADHD, ODD and PDDNOS An Academic Mothers Perspective

Behavior. Behavior is the stem of ADHD. I will begin with ADHD since that is the main focus of the blog and also the main diagnosis of my 7 year old son. What began in preschool was to be remained undiagnosed much to the fault of my own denial of my sons behavior which has by now escalated into an unmanageable volcano that only I can miraculously bear the heat from. Unfortunately ADHD behavior does not fit into shopping malls, airports or even parks or play equipment since there is always some kind of disaster or drama that unfolds at places such as these. ADHD shows no pre thought for consequences and in-fact can be downright dangerous in action such as high tree climbing or having no fear of busy roads. ADHD does not discriminate to low socio-economic households, high earners or military families. ADHD is not environmental.

As for diets, we have tried them in fact our children have been on the "Royal Prince Alfred Hospital-no additives diet" virtually from birth. Oh I know you cant control every bit of food that goes into their mouthes but I certainly tried, I even had our own cakes in the preschool freezer incase some kid bought in a toxic supermarket cake laden with colours and preservatives. Removing wheat and gluten from the diet did little also but I am still not convinced to rule out entirely that external toxicity/allergy/sensitivity from foods taken internally through the course of eating has a possibility of causing modified behaviors. I have recently done a study on sacilliates and am considering eliminating that before trying the Ritalin that i have picked up today and put into my cupboard.

On Monday I will be meeting with my sons teacher to discuss his diagnosis, we have not decided yet if we will begin the Ritalin trial. The fact is he is a beautiful child with a heart of gold who puts special surprises on my bed and leaves me precious I love you notes to discover around the house. He is emotional and sympathetic to me even though he lives in a friendless world at school with no acquisition of education because his impulses are not curbed and he ignores his in-class lessons and upsets other children. As noted previously I am concentrating on simply touching on the ADHD subject and have left his Autism Spectrum Disorder for another time. Its tearing and difficult. The answer is not clear and I wonder will it ever be?
